USAI vs. USFI: The Truth About CMAS Affiliation in India — Verified, Documented, Undisputed

There is only one CMAS-affiliated national federation for underwater sports and finswimming in India — and that is the Underwater Sports Association India (USAI). This isn't a marketing claim. It isn't an opinion. It is a documented, verifiable fact, confirmed directly by CMAS itself, and it's time every athlete, parent, and coach in India's underwater sports community knew it clearly.

With more than one organization operating in this space, confusion has understandably crept in. Some athletes assume that any group using the words "underwater sports federation" or "underwater sports association" carries the same international standing. It does not. Below, we lay out exactly what's publicly documented — sourced directly from official pages — so every athlete can see the facts for themselves and make a confident, informed decision.

What CMAS Says, Directly

CMAS — the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (World Underwater Federation) — is the sole global governing body for finswimming and all underwater sports disciplines. CMAS maintains a public, official record of its affiliated national federations for every country in the world, and India's entry is unambiguous.

On CMAS's own official website, the listed national federation for India is:

Underwater Sport Association India (USAI) — Affiliated Affiliated to world underwater federation.

In plain terms: USAI is officially affiliated with the World Underwater Federation (CMAS) — a status confirmed on CMAS's own website, not merely claimed on ours.

USAI's own Certificate of Recognition, issued directly by CMAS, states this with complete clarity:

"This is to confirm that the sole CMAS affiliated National Federation for underwater sports and activities in India is the Underwater Sports Association (India). As such, the USAI is the only sport entity entitled to govern and develop the underwater movement in India, to train, select and field athletes for any of the international sport events organized by or under the aegis of CMAS, to organize or license the organization of national sport events, and to award the corresponding national titles."

That last line matters enormously: USAI is the only body entitled to award national titles in underwater sports in India, and the only body that can select and field athletes for CMAS's international events. No other organization in the country holds this mandate. You can view the certificate directly on USAI's official About page.

This is a position USAI has earned and one we stand behind with complete confidence — every athlete who trains and competes through USAI is building toward a future that is genuinely, verifiably recognised on the world stage.

What USFI Says About Itself

The Underwater Sports Federation of India (USFI) is a separate organization also active in India's finswimming space. In fairness, USFI is transparent about its own status on its About Us page, which states:

"Underwater Sports Federation of India (USFI) is a non-profit charitable sports development organization of pan-India. It is registered under the Society Act. (BOM.XXIX of 1950)"

Registration under the Societies Registration Act is a legitimate legal structure in India — but it is not, and has never been, the same thing as CMAS affiliation. It does not confer any international sporting recognition. Notably, USFI's own page links a document titled "USFI – IWSF Affiliation" — not a CMAS affiliation document. We encourage every athlete to view both organizations' public documentation side by side and see the difference for themselves.

Why This Distinction Matters — Confidently, Clearly

This isn't a bureaucratic footnote. It has direct, real consequences for every athlete's career:

  • Only USAI can field Indian athletes internationally. Per CMAS's own certificate, USAI alone holds the mandate to train, select, and field athletes for CMAS World Championships, World Cups, and continental championships. Achievements at non-CMAS-affiliated events do not feed into this pathway.
  • Only USAI-issued national titles carry CMAS recognition. Certificates and titles from organizations outside the CMAS-affiliated structure are not valid for international ranking, selection, or recognition purposes — no matter how they are presented.
  • Your time and effort deserve to count. Every hour an athlete spends training and every trip a family makes to compete should count toward something real. Competing through USAI's CMAS-affiliated network is the only way to guarantee that it does.

Beware of Misleading Affiliation Claims

In recent times, promotional posters and social media graphics have circulated showing CMAS branding or affiliation claims that cannot be verified against CMAS's own official records. USAI urges every athlete, parent, and club to treat any claim of CMAS affiliation with healthy scepticism unless it can be checked directly against CMAS's official national federations list. A logo on a poster proves nothing on its own — CMAS affiliation is a matter of official record, not marketing material.

Don't let your time, energy, and hard-earned training investment go toward an event or programme that can't be verified. Two minutes of checking can save months of wasted effort.

How to Verify Affiliation Before You Register

Before registering for any finswimming or underwater sports event in India, USAI recommends these simple steps:

  1. Check CMAS's official national federations page directly at cmas.org/national-federations/asia/india-asai.html — the single source of truth, maintained by CMAS itself
  2. Ask the organizing body directly which national federation they operate under, and request documented proof of CMAS affiliation specifically — not just a logo, a claim, or an unrelated affiliation certificate
  3. Verify that your state secretary or organizing unit is formally affiliated with USAI, since state-level bodies must be affiliated with the recognised national federation to be part of the CMAS-recognised structure
  4. Compare documents, not just names. As shown above, both USAI and USFI publish their credentials publicly — take two minutes to see what each document actually says
  5. When in doubt, contact USAI directly — as India's one and only CMAS-affiliated national federation, we are always glad to confirm whether a specific event, state unit, or organizing body is properly affiliated
