Meeraz Hussain: Assam's Finswimming Journey from Federation Cups to International Waters

Every athlete's story adds another thread to the growing fabric of finswimming in India, and Meeraz Hussain from Assam is one of the sport's most dedicated long-term competitors — a journey that has taken him from state-level Federation Cups all the way to representing India internationally, not once, but twice.

The Underwater Sports Association (India) — USAI is proud to share Meeraz's story, in his own words, as part of our ongoing series celebrating the athletes building underwater sports across the country and inspiring the future athletes in the Underwater Sports Federation of India.

A Journey That Started With the Right Guidance

Like many athletes in India's growing finswimming community, Meeraz's entry into the sport came through mentorship. In his own words, his journey began because of Rajeev Sir, who introduced him to the sport and supported him at every step. "My finswimming journey started because of Rajeev Sir — he helped me a lot, he guided me, and because of him I've been able to compete at the national level, and twice at the international level as well," Meeraz shared.

He also credits Kuldeep Sir for first making him aware of finswimming as a sport: "That's how I came to know about finswimming, and that's how I kept playing it."

A Multi-Year Competitive Journey

Over the past several years, Meeraz has been a consistent presence on India's competitive finswimming circuit — from a state-level event in Haryana in 2021, through five consecutive editions of the All India Finswimming Federation Cup and National Finswimming Championship, all the way to the 9th National Finswimming Championship in Goa in 2026. Along the way, he has competed at venues including Gujarat, Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Talkatora Stadium in Delhi, Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad, Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), and Goa — racing across Surface, Bi-Fins, Apnea, and Free Diving events, moving up through age-group categories into the Senior A group.

Note on international events: Meeraz confirmed he represented India internationally twice — once in November 2021 in Egypt, and once in September 2022 in Thailand.

Beyond national competition, Meeraz has had the honour of representing India internationally on two occasions — once in November 2021 in Egypt, and again in September 2022 in Thailand. Reflecting on the experience, he shared that competing internationally was "a very good experience," and once again credited Rajeev Sir's support in making both opportunities possible.

A Genuine Love for the Sport

What comes through most clearly in Meeraz's own reflections isn't just the list of competitions — it's his genuine enthusiasm for finswimming itself. "It's a really good event," he shared. "I've competed in finswimming in many different places, and everywhere I went, I had a really good experience."

That kind of sustained passion — competing year after year, across state and national events, and carrying it all the way to international competition — is exactly the spirit that continues to grow underwater sports in India from the ground up.
